Learn To Skate
Learn to Skate, also known as Mini-mites, is Wausau Youth Hockey's free introductory hockey program for girls and boys. Mini-mites is for kids who have NOT had prior experience skating. During the season we help kids learn to skate. Most of all we have fun!
Season Plan
The goal of Learn to skate is getting kids comfortable on the ice, working up to standing and then skating on their own, introducing the proper way to hold a stick, with the goal being a skater is ready and excited to graduate onto Mite Hockey after the season commences.
The first half of the season will be skating based drills and activities.
The second half of the season incorporates sticks & pucks into the drills. Most drills will be pod based
Ages
This program is for brand new skaters, with birthdays between January 1, 2015, and October 31, 2019. Our program focuses on learning to skate and basic stick handling while having fun. Mini-mites is intended to be a 1 year program. Following the year of mini-mites, skaters should sign up for Mites. If you have any questions, please contact info@wausauhockey.org
When
This program will start Sunday, November 12, 2023, and ends in mid-February. The program is kicked off by a Try Hockey For Free Day that then transitions into the Learn to Skate / Mini-Mite program. Follow our Facebook page for date details.
Where
We practice at Marathon County Park.
Practices
We meet twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays. Attendance is not required for all sessions.
Games
There are not any scrimmage games for Mini-Mites. We do incorporate other fun games into practices.
There may be an opportunity for an optional game at the end of the season.
Equipment
All equipment BESIDES skates and sticks are provided. There is a $150 deposit collected at equipment pickup. This is returned at the end of the season when equipment is turned in.
COST
Wausau Youth Hockey Fee: FREE + USA Hockey Fee
USA Hockey Fee varies depending on age.
*Registration with USA Hockey is required to register and participate in any hockey activities
*USA Hockey fee is only paid once per hockey season
